- Gatorz Magnum 2.0, Black lens
- Gatorz Magnum 2.0 Tan Cerakote, Inferno photochromatic lens
- Gatorz Magnum Ballistic, Black lens

 

가토즈는 다양한 모델의 고글이 있지만 그중 매그넘 프레임은 가토즈를 대표하는 No1 셀링 모델이라 합니다. 그도 그럴것이 네이비씰이 착용한 사진 혹은 13시간, 론서바이버 영화같은 대중 매체에 노출되어 밀리터리 기어 매니아라면 이름은 몰라도 가토즈 고글을 본적은 있을것이라 생각이 듭니다. 저는 6,7 년여전에 네이비씰 VBSS 트레이닝에서 처음 매그넘 고글을 보고 브랜드와 모델명을 몰라 한참 찾았던 기억이 어렴풋이 납니다.

 

Gatorz sells a wide range of eyewear, but their most popular model is probably the Magnum frame.I think we’ve all seen a pair on the eyes of Navy SEALs in real life pictures and videos or in movies such as 13 Hours or Lone Survivor. As gear enthusiasts, maybe we might not have known exactly what brand they were from, but we definitely recognized the shape of this iconic frame. I personally remember seeing them for the first time about 6,7 years ago during a Navy SEAL VBSS training vid and I still remember having a hard time trying to find out the make and model of their eye pro.

 

시중엔 여러 택티컬 고글이 있겠지만 필자는 미군용 택티컬 고글하면 오클리 엠프레임이 처음으로 떠오르곤 했습니다. 이또한 수많은 미군 사진, 대중매체의 노출에 의한 것이었단걸 생각하면 역시 이런 광고효과는 결코 무시할수없다는 생각도 드는군요. 이런 영향을 받아서인지 필자가 첫구매한 택티컬 고글 역시도 오클리 엠프레임 2.0이었고 이후 추가로 구매한 2개의 고글 또한 엠프레임 3.0 이었습니다. 고글의 디자인이나 품질, 기능성은 참 마음에 들었지만 큰 단점으로 느껴진 부분이 있었는데 고글 자체가 서양인 기준으로 디자인된 높은 코받침과 렌즈의 큰 곡면 구조로인해 평균적으로 낮은 코와 광대가 돌출된 동양인 얼굴형엔 적합하지 않다고 느꼈습니다.

 

There are definitely a lot of tactical eye protection options on the market right now, but for me the main one that comes to mind are probably the Oakley M frames. The M frames have also been widely seen in videos and pictures of operators for years now, and have enjoyed the soft marketing boost that comes with the popularity. I’m not gonna lie, I too was swayed by all that and ended up purchasing myself a pair of M frame 2.0s for my first pair of tactical glasses and subsequently bought 2 more pairs of 3.0s. I really liked the M frames in terms of their build quality and design but there was one major problem I had with them. They were designed to fit a caucasian facial structure. We Asians have a lower nose bridge and more pronounced cheekbones than most westerners, so fit was a problem.

서양인 기준으로 디자인된 높은 코받침은 고글을 착용했을때 코받침 본연의 역할을 하지 못하며 더불어 렌즈의 큰 곡면 구조로인해 광대로 렌즈를 떠받치게되는 현상이 발생하게 됩니다. 이에 수반되는 문제로는 광대에 닿은 렌즈가 땀에 노출되어 코팅이 벗겨지는 문제가 발생합니다. 이는 개인적인 경험이기도 하지만 엠프레임을 사용하는 주변인들의 동일한 문제를 겪은 이야기를 여러차례 들었기에 필자만의 문제는 아닐것이라 생각됩니다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 엠프레임용 도수클립 키트에 포함된 코받침으로 교체해보았지만 이또한 완벽한 해결책이 되지않아 다른 방법을 찾던중 동사의 엠프레임 전용 헤일로킷(방풍 기능의 악세사리)을 추가 구매한후에서야 완벽하진 않아도 어느정도 문제를 해결할수 있게 되었습니다.

 

Because the M frames were not designed for an Asian facial structure, the nose bridge pads do not function as intended to support the weight of the glasses and also due to the extreme curvature of the lens, the bottom portion of them actually rests on our pronounced cheekbones. This leads to sweat and oil accumulating on the lens eventually causing the lens coating to wear off prematurely. This was a strictly personal experience, so your mileage may differ, but that being said, I’ve heard many anecdotes from people around me who’ve had the exact same experience, so I doubt it is an isolated case. I tried replacing my nose pads with those that came in the prescription clip on kit, but even that didn’t really solve the problem. Finally I tried using the Helo kit (basically a rubber gasket that goes around the lens to block wind and dust) which worked to some extent, but it wasn’t a perfect solution.

위와같은 불편을 겪고난후 이 문제로부터 자유로울수 있는 고글이 있는지 정보를 수집하게 되었는데 그렇게 눈에 띈 제품이 바로 가토즈 매그넘 이었습니다. 정보수집중 특히나 주목했던 포인트는 플라스틱 고글과 다르게 알루미늄 프레임으로 제작되어 사용자의 얼굴형태에 따라 휘어 커스텀 착용할수 있다는 점과 조정이 가능한 코받침이었습니다. 고글 착용에 있어 이 두가지를 사용자에 맞춰 조정해줄수 있다면 엠프레임을 사용하며 겪었던 단점을 극복할수도 있겠다는 생각에 구매로 이어지게 되었습니다. 필자가 최초로 구매했던 가토즈 매그넘 스탠다드 모델은 서양인 기준 모델이어서 아시안 코받침을 추가구매해 교체해주었고 프레임과 더불어 코받침 조정을 거친뒤 앞서 언급했던 엠프레임을 착용하며 느꼈던 단점을 해결하게 되었고 이에 만족해 인페르노 포토크로믹 렌즈 모델을 추가로 구매하게 되었습니다.

 

So after suffering through all those problems with the M frames, I set out to find a product that would work better for me. This is when I came across the Gatorz Magnums. The main thing that appealed to me was that the frame itself was constructed from aluminum that could be bent and formed to the user’s facial structure. Also the nose pad was customizable for users with different nose heights. I figured since these were the 2 biggest pain points I had with the M frames, the Magnums would be worth a shot. The first model I purchased wasn’t specifically an “Asian fit” model, but I was able to purchase an Asian fit nose pad and bend the frame to fit my face. The results were actually very satisfactory, and I had none of the problems I was having with the M frames. In fact, I liked them so much I ended up buying another pair, with the Inferno photochromic lenses.

이는 여담이지만 필자가 첫 스탠다드 매그넘을 구매했을 약 2년 6개월여전 즈음엔 아시안 코받침을 유럽에서 따로 구매를 했었는데 이후 국내 유명택티컬샵(개인적으로 국내 택티컬샵중 가장 전문적이고 합리적인 가격으로 판매하는 샵이라 생각함)인 액션기X에 가토즈가 국내 독점 총판으로 입점하여 고글과 악세사리를 현지가와 큰차이없는 금액으로 쉽게 구매할수 있게 된건 국내 유저에게 분명 환영할만한 일이라고 생각합니다.

As a side note, I just want to say that when I bought my Magnums about 2 years ago, I had to purchase the Asian nose pad from a European website, but now since Gatorz has an official Korean distributor, (ActionGXXX) Korean customers don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to have parts shipped from overseas.

 

필자가 매그넘을 구매할 당시엔 해당 프레임이 지금과 같이 다양하지 않았던것으로 기억하는데 현재 시점엔 여러가지 파생 모델이 생겨 이에 대한 차이점과 구매당시 느꼈던 궁금증에 대해 작성해보도록 하겠습니다. 첫구매 당시 모델명과 더불어 뒤에 따라붙는 단어가 길어서 이게 뭔가 했던 기억이 나기에 이부분부터 짚어 보겠습니다.

 

When I bought these frames for the first time, there weren’t as many choices to choose from, but as of now, there seems to be a plethora of different models and options available. So, let’s look at Gatoz’s naming scheme and try to explain what is going on.

- 가토즈: 고글 브랜드명.

- 매그넘 / 아시안핏: 고글 프레임명 / 아시안 코받침 기본 장착.

- 검정 프레임: 프레임 컬러명으로 무광, 은색, 세라코트 탄 프레임등의 다양한 컬러가 있음.

- 검정 로고: 고글 측면에 부착된 가토즈 로고의 색상을 뜻하며 테두리에 은색이 들어간 일반적인 로고, 완전 검정(영문 표기 Blackout으로 표기)이 있음. 전자의 경우 운동선수들이나 패션용으로 적합, 후자의 경우 노출에 민감한 군,경용으로 적합.

- 변색렌즈: 프레임에 장착된 렌즈의 컬러를 뜻하며 논 편광, 편광 검정, 로즈, 블루미러, 썬버스트 미러, 그린 미러, 크롬, 포토크로믹(변색) 등의 다양한 렌즈가 있음.

Magnum Asian Fit - Name of the frame, Asian fit comes with the Asian nose pads out of the box

Black Frame - Color of the frame. Other options are matte, silver, tan Cerakote, etc

Black logo - Color of the logo on the sides. There are versions with silver elements and also blacked out versions, for users who want to minimize their reflective signature.

Photochromatic lens - Color of the lens on the frame. There are a lot of options available here as well, including polarized, rose, blue mirrored, sunburst mirrored, green mirrored, chrome and photochromic.

 

이중 오늘 리뷰에서 다룰 매그넘 프레임은 클래식 매그넘, 매그넘 2.0으로 크게 두가지 형태로 나눌수 있겠습니다.

 

- 클래식 매그넘: 가토즈를 대표하는 클래식 매그넘 프레임이며 기본적으로 서양인 두상을 기준으로 디자인된 프레임을 말함.

 

- 매그넘2.0: 클래식 매그넘을 아시아인 두상에 맞춰 프레임 디자인에 약간의 변화를 주고 아시안 코받침이 기본 장착된 프레임을 말함.

 

In today’s review, I’ll be talking about the Magnum frames, which actually come in 2 flavors : the classic and 2.0

 

- The Classic Magnum : The flagship model for Gatorz eyewear, designed for more western facial structures.

 

- The Magnum 2.0 : An altered version of the classic magnum frames designed for an Asian facial structure and also includes the Asian nose pads.

- 클래식 매그넘과 매그넘 2.0의 눈에띄는 큰 차이점은 전면 프레임의 좌우면 너비와 좌우 끝 밴딩의 차이점을 들수 있습니다. 하단에 첨부된 프레임의 사진을 보면 리벳이 박힌곳의 너비가 매그넘 2.0이 좀더 넓고 이부분에서 스탠다드 매그넘에는 없는 밴딩 포인트를 볼수 있습니다. 이 두가지 디자인 변경으로 인해 평균적으로 두상의 좌우가 넓고 광대가 발달한 동양인의 얼굴에 좀더 적합한 핏을 보여준다고 생각합니다.(핏에 대한 생각은 개인차가 있을수 있음) 개인적으로 가토즈 고글하면 떠오르는 이미지가 측면에 두드러지는 8점의 리벳이라 생각하는데 이 특유의 시그니처를 그대로 살리면서도 동양인용으로 디자인한 측면에 대해 높이사고 싶습니다. 

 

The biggest difference between the Classic Magnums and the 2.0s are the width of where the 8 hinge rivets are located and the overall curvature of the frame itself. As you can see from the pictures below, the 2.0s have a slightly narrower width (height-wise) where the rivets are located compared to the Classic Magnums, and also have a slight bend in the frame itself right in between the rivets and the lens. Because of these 2 changes, the 2.0 frames tend to fit Asian faces (which tend to have more pronounced cheekbones, making our faces flatter) much better. Obviously this is a generalization and not everyone will have the same experience, however. Personally, I think one of the most iconic features of Gatorz are the 8 rivets on the side, and I feel like they made the adjustments to the frame for Asian faces while keeping all the design elements that keep the frames instantly recognizable as Gatorz.

 

- 라이트를 활용해 프레임 밴딩 유무의 차이를 조금더 쉽게 확인할수 있도록 촬영해봤습니다. 프레임 측면을 유심히 보시면 프레임 다리의 길이, 가토즈 로고의 위치등 소소한 디자인 변경점을 볼수 있습니다.

 

I used a light to highlight the bend in the frame. You can clearly see how the bend casts a hard shadow on the 2.0s opposed to no shadow on the 1.0s. You might also notice subtle design alterations on the 2.0s such as the length of the temple (arms) and the positioning of the logo.

 

- 밴딩 포인트로 인해 프레임 좌우너비의 차이와 더불어 고글을 전면에서 볼때도 큰차이가 있는걸 볼수 있습니다. 사실 프레임 형태의 차이를 알고보면 잘보이는데 모를고 볼땐 눈치채기 어렵지 않나 싶기도 하군요.

 

The bend in the frame right before the rivets makes the 2.0 frame wider when seen from the front. If you know the bend is there it is noticeable enough, but to the casual observer, the difference between the two models is negligible.

- 클래식 코받침(서양인용)과 아시안 코받침(동양인용)의 차이를 확인할수 있습니다. 코받침은 고품질의 논슬립 실리콘으로 마감되어 있으며 논슬립 실리콘 마감덕분인지 먼지가 잘달라붙는 작은 불편함이 있으나 물티슈로 쉽게 청소가 가능합니다. 코받침 내부엔 와이어가 내장되어있어 사용자의 코 높이나 형태에 따라 조정이 가능한 특 장점이 있습니다.

 

A clear difference can be seen in the shape of the classic and Asian fit nose pads. The nose pads are finished with a high quality non-slip silicon coating that helps with grip and prevent slippage during wear. The coating does attract a lot of dust but can be cleaned off easily with a damp towel. The nose pads have an internal wire that can be further adjusted for better fit.

- 가토즈 고글 프레임 컬러의 경우 단색 세라코트 혹은 특정 위장 패턴을 가진 한정판 프레임들이 있습니다. 리뷰에 사용된 모델은 세라코트 탄 처리된 프레임이며 인페르노 포토크로믹(변색) 렌즈가 적용된 모델로 낮, 밤 고글 한개로 모두 사용할수 있는 장점이 있습니다. 포토크로믹 렌즈의 특성은 자외선양에 따라 렌즈의 컬러가 투명에서 검정 / 검정에서 투명으로 변하게 되는데 렌즈 변색의 빠른 대응을 위해 완전히 까맣게 변하지는 않기 때문에 충분히 눈이 식별될 정도의 밝기를 가집니다. 이런 특성으로 인해 특별히 눈 노출에도 민감한 직종의 종사자라면 클리어, 검정 렌즈의 모델을 별도로 운용하는것이 좋습니다.

 

Gatorz frames come in a variety of color options, such as various colors of Cerakote and camo. The model I’m reviewing is finished with tan Cerakote and sports Inferno Photochromic lenses, which make it effective during both dark and light environments. Photochromic lenses go from clear to dark depending on the amount of UV light that hits them. For quicker transition speeds, the lens won’t turn totally dark, but just dark enough to be able to make out the wearer’s eyes. Because of this, if you need complete protection from the sun, I recommend you get a pair with the normal black lenses.

- 파편, 먼지, 방풍 용도로 제작된 탈부착형 폼 인서트이며 클래식 매그넘 & 매그넘 2.0 두가지 프레임에 모두 사용가능한 전용의 악세사리 입니다. 약 1년전즘 일본의 Smile-EYE Tactical에서 제작되어 가토즈의 공식 악세사리로 채택된것으로 알고 있습니다. 시작품 공개 영상때부터 주의깊게 봐왔던 제품인데 출시 직후 해외구매로는 고가여서 액션기X에 입고된 직후 바로 구매했던 악세사리 입니다. 개인적으론 매그넘 고글 사용자의 필수품중 하나라고 생각합니다.

This insert was designed to keep dust, wind and other fine particles out of your eyes and can be used in both the Classic Magnum and Magnum 2.0. The insert was developed by a Japanese company called Smile-EYE tactical, but has since been adopted and sold by the official Gatorz store. I’ve kept my eye on this insert since it was announced, but had to wait for the official korean distributor to start carrying it before I could make the purchase, due to the high cost of import. Personally I think it is a must have accessory for anyone who wants to wear the Magnums like a goggle.

- 가스켓 장착후 고글 착용시 얼굴에 닿는 폼이 매우 부드러워 이질감이 거의 느껴지지 않아 착용감이 좋습니다. 특히 사용자의 얼굴형에 따라선 매그넘만 착용했을때 알루미늄 프레임이 광대에 살짝 닿을수있는데 이부분에 불편함을 느끼는 사용자라면 특히 구매를 고려해볼만합니다.

The foam that contacts your face is very soft and supple, and it almost feels like the Magnums are part of your face when worn with the foam gasket. Depending on what model of Magnums you have, you still might run into the issue of the frame touching your cheekbones, so this product can definitely alleviate that problem.

- 매그넘 밀스펙 프레임은 일반적인 매그넘과 다르게 완전한 무광 프레임이 주요특징중 하나 입니다. 발리스틱 모델은 매그넘 2.0이 별도로 없는듯 하고 클래식 매그넘 무광 프레임에 아시안 코받침이 부착된 모델로만 출시된것으로 추정되며 리뷰에 사용된 고글이 이와 같은 사양입니다.

 

The Ballistic Magnums can be distinguished from the other models by their matte no gloss finish. However, the Magnum 2.0 frames are not offered in the ballistic variety and currently the only ballistic option for Asian users are the Classic Magnum frames with the Asian nose pads. The pair of Ballistic Magnums I used for this review are configured this way.

* 장점 *

- 사용자의 두상이나 얼굴형태에 따라 커스텀핏이 가능함.

- 밀스펙 기준의 7075 항공기 제작시 사용되는 고품질의 알루미늄 프레임과 더불어 뛰어난 가공및 후처리로 프리미엄 감성을 느낄수 있음.

- 사용자의 코높이에 따라 조정이 가능한 코받침(코받침 실리콘 내에 와이어가 들어가 있음)

- 사용자의 얼굴형태에 따라 고글의 하단부가 광대에 닿을수 있으나 렌즈가 아닌 프레임에 닿기에 렌즈 코팅이 벗겨지지 않음.

 

TLDR Summary

 

* Pros *

- Frames can be custom fitted to any facial structure due to their pliable material

- Premium look and feel of mil-spec aircraft grade 7075 aluminum.

- Customizable nose pad with internal wire

- The part of the frame most likely to contact the wearer’s face is the aluminum frame and not the lens itself, so no need to worry about the coating coming off

 

* 단점 *

- 셀프 렌즈 교체가 불가하여 포토크로믹(변색) 모델을 구매하거나 클리어, 검정의 고글을 따로 휴대해야하는 점.

- 눈 노출에 민감한쪽에 종사한다면 포토크로믹(변색) 모델로 해결이 안되어 필수적으로 2개의 고글이 필요할수 있는점.

- 비싼 가격(클리어, 검정 렌즈를 별도 구매하게되면 상당한 고가)

 

* Cons *

- Users can’t really change the lenses themselves, so you might need to have a quiver of eyewear for each use case

- If your use case dictates you wear these to protect your eyes from frequent and heavy sunlight, the photochromic lenses won’t cut it and you probably will need a second pair with normal black polarized lenses

- High price. (Especially if you are getting multiple pairs for each use case)
